These galleries are not collections of self-indulgent vacation snapshots. Their photos purposefully illustrate concepts and issues in botany, soil science, geology, ecology, and other fields of natural history. Each gallery is its own essay, a interplay of images and descriptive text. While I'm told we live in a society that is growing increasingly allergic to the art and joy of reading, I have stubbornly insisted on providing captions intended to add meaning and detail to the pictures.
